hmm...we should talk about it. maybe increased prominence of the links to your various social networks? inclusion of your twitpic stream? increase the content in the "about" page, or create an additional page, that could serve as the equivalent of the profile/interests page of facebook. any thoughts as to the specific sorts of functionality you are looking for?

another thought is to decrease the prominence of the blog itself, since it does get updated, but not frequently. maybe it can share screen real estate more equally with twitter/twitpic, linkedin, formspring, etc.

I understand the notion of a crippled Facebook page, but doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of the site? I don't think that I should have to remove all of my information in order to feel comfortable using the site.

As for the sidebar, that is under consideration right now. I am looking at my options to make this page a bit more of a social hub for myself online - got any thoughts?

It is nice to see Blunks getting some commenters. Apparently it takes a cataclysmic event like Richard closing his Facebook Account to draw out all the lurkers :)

What about the option of leaving a Facebook account open, but drastically reducing/controlling the amount of information available on it? FB recently made me try and declare all of my "interests" as "pages" or some such thing, and when I deselected each one, they were all removed from my profile. Now I have no interests (hah!). And maybe I won't go back and add anymore. Facebook can only share/control the information that we provide it (except for, I suppose, other people posting pictures of us). By reducing the amount of information I provide, I feel like I can use Facebook as a slightly interactive address book/contact organizer/rolodex.

Hey Sandra,
I appreciate that it's not an easy decision to make. It's certainly true that I was a much heavier user of Facebook during grad school than I have been over the past months, so perhaps its more difficult for you to consider leaving at this time.
I think that for all Facebook users, there is a cost/benefit analysis to consider. If the costs of using Facebook outweigh the benefits, then I think you should seriously consider closing your account. If the benefits to your life (social or otherwise) are greater than the costs, then by all means keep it open.
